2. Runde GSX-R Cup 2008 Monza

Almost as expected, former World Superbike star Fabrizio Pirovano won the second round of the 2008 Suzuki GSX-R Cup race at Monza today. Piro was a ‘wild card’ entry and was never going to let any of the youngsters upstage him at his home track. But he had to work hard for his win today as Frenchman Emeric Jonchiere and Spaniards Ismael Ortega and Arturo Tizon hustled him throughout the 8-lap race. In the end though, Piro’s experience was enough to give him the win, even though it was Jonchiere who took the points. Ismael Ortega finished just two tenths of a second behind Jonchiere, with Arturo Tizon fourth.

“This is my first time at Monza and I have enjoyed myself a lot. We don’t have any tracks like this in France and it was a real blast to ride round this famous circuit. Pirovano has a lot of experience and although we all pushed him hard, he managed to stay ahead of us all. I didn’t mind too much, because he is a ‘wild card’ here and so doesn’t score any points. I knew that I had to stay ahead of Ortega and Tizon and that’s what I made sure I did. When the rain fell a little at Lesmo, I took it very carefully there and, apart from that, there were no problems at all. The bike worked well and so did the tyres. It’s been a fantastic experience to race here at Monza in front of such a huge crowd and I’ve really had a great time.”

“I had some problem with my neck over the weekend and had to have a little painkilling injection this morning, but I forgot about the problem in the race. The bike was very good and the tyres did a good job all the way to the end. I was careful at Lesmo when it was a bit wet, but I know this track pretty well and used my knowledge today. It’s always great to win a race - especially when it is at your home track!”
